“With excitement and confidence”: Dappled Things Announces Editorial Change

Dear readers, writers, subscribers, and Dappled Things community,

After far too short a tenure as editor in chief of Dappled Things, I have decided to step away in order to attend to pressing family matters. I have had the great privilege of being part of the magazine’s editorial board since 2014 and would have gladly served many more years, had my circumstances not changed. Still, it is with excitement and confidence that I can announce that longtime associate editor Andrew Calis has agreed to take on the role, starting with the SS. Peter & Paul 2026 issue.

Andrew Calis is a Palestinian-American poet and essayist who has published in the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day series, The AtlanticAmericaDappled Things, and elsewhere. His work has been nominated for a variety of awards, including a Pushcart Prize and a PEN/Voelkner Award. Andrew holds a PhD in English Literature from The Catholic University of America. He is a teacher and lives with his family near Baltimore.

Andrew’s talent, experience, creativity, and commitment to Dappled Things give me great hope for the future of the magazine as it enters its third decade. Thank you for saying yes, Andrew. You are the right man for the job.

Andrew Calis

Eric Cyr

I also have the pleasure of welcoming Eric Cyr to the editorial board as Assistant Executive Editor. Eric is a writer, musician, and teacher in Duluth, Minnesota, where he lives with his wife and children. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He has written for many journals, including Word on Fire, Our Sunday Visitor, and St. Austin Review, where he received the St. Austin Review Prize in Fiction. With his band Cyr and the Cosmonauts, he has released two albums of original music. He is the author of a collection of short stories, Here It Snows in June, coming from Wiseblood Books in June 2026. Eric, welcome to Dappled Things! We are glad to have you.

As I transition out of the editorial role, my heartfelt thanks goes to the Dappled Things board, past and present. Working alongside some of the finest Catholic writers, poets, and artists of our time has been an honor. I am especially grateful to Bernardo Aparicio García, Katy Carl, Karen Ullo, Eleanor Nicholson, Ann Thomas, and Mary Finnegan for their friendship, wise counsel, and continual encouragement. Thank you also to the Collegium Institute for its guidance and support. I look forward to seeing Dappled Things grow as it continues to foster and advance a vibrant Catholic culture, both in the arts and letters and in the full fabric of contemporary life.
