The Thirty-Nine Lashes

One lash each time for having:

been born,
been born in a manger,
been born into a poor family,
been born in Palestine,
been born during the Roman Empire;
been a Galilean;
been fearing the Lord;
been respectful to his parents,
been of help to his parents,
been caring for his parents;
been sympathetic to everybody,
been supportive of everybody;
been a teacher by example;

said love one another,
said love your enemies,
said love the Lord your God;
said blessed are the persecuted,
said blessed are the merciful,
said blessed are the pure of heart;
said the last will be first;
said peace be with you;
said my kingdom is not of this world;
said I am the son of man,
said I am the bread of life,
said I am the light of the world,
said I am the way and the truth and the life;

relieved the afflicted,
preached a sermon on a mountain,
wandered the Judean Desert;
entered Jerusalem,
checked the Zealots,
braved the Sanhedrin,
bothered the Prefect;
let them betray him,
let them capture him,
let them scoff him,
let them torture him;
been unafraid of them all,
been unafraid of the cross.
